Abstract

The advent of modern communications technology has changed the face of urban traffic management and control over recent years. Implementation of internet style technologies offer traffic managers opportunities not previously available to collect information from the roadside as well as disseminating information back to the end user via a range of different technologies. This rapid transition of technology into the traffic management and control environment brings with it unique challenges and an associated change in understanding. This paper will look at some of the issues surrounding the use of modern communications technology within a UTMC system and discusses the different approaches which may be necessary to system design, management and operation.
