An equation is given for the dependence of impact speed on travelling speed, deceleration, distance, and reaction time. the usefulness is demonstrated in the context of Autonomous emergency Braking (AeB). A model of AeB performance is proposed, using concepts of a look-ahead distance and a reaction time. consequently, impact speed is expressed in terms of two conditions (challenge distance and vehicle speed), and three vehicle characteristics (look-ahead distance, reaction time, and deceleration during emergency braking). thus the theory permits a test procedure to give information on performance in all conditions, not only in the conditions specified by the test protocol: that is, at other speeds and other challenge distances.
