A Critical Review of the Equilibrium Approach to Traffic Assignment

Abstract

This paper critically reviews the three key concerns of the equilibrium approach to vehicular traffic assignment: the reasoning behind the demarcation of traffic analysis zones, the trip maker's general notion of route choice, and the interdependent relationship between route choice and congestion. The findings recognise no concrete definitions of land-use access opportunities while demarcating the traffic analysis zones using the roadway structure of an urban morphology. The conclusion also suggests that the cognitive measures of trip-making, such as the rip-maker's common perceptions of route distance, travel speed, and route choice, are the important aspects of vehicular traffic assignment.
