Desktop traffic control for London: developing UTC-VISSIM interface.

Abstract

This paper describes the joint TfL/TRL development of a software interface between London’s bespoke Urban Traffic Control (UTC) system and PTV’s widely used micro-simulation traffic modelling software VISSIM. The interface is used by the Directorate of Traffic Operations (DTO) to model the behaviour of UTC and SCOOT in an offline environment. The paper describes the interface and its key benefits and explains the advantages of UTC-VISSIM over SCOOTVISSIM. Future developments include a new version of the interface which will be entirely PCbased and will run much faster than real time. The use and application of the interface will be the subject of a second paper, planned for 2009.
