Exploring Pedestrian Control Methodology

Abstract

Looking into the likely operation of a newly proposed Toucan crossing it was found that the intended location suffered from queuing traffic. The was was due to an uncontrolled roundabout close by which was subject at certain times of the day to excess traffic demands on all approaches. It was therefore decided to explore the current control rationales to see whether they could be improved. Having considered several options it was decided that the solution was to better manage pedestrian facilities when traffic was slow moving or stationery due to exit blocking. This paper describes the process of evaluating the design options and control rationales.
