Implementing Sutton’s approach to ‘Locking in the benefits’

Abstract

In 2006 Transport for London named the London Borough of Sutton as its first sustainable travel borough for a three-year programme. This paper describes how Sutton has developed its ‘Enabling Smarter Travel Choices’ strategy to promote the uptake of sustainable transport modes and to lock in the benefits of the Smarter Travel Sutton project. Mindful that once funding runs out and the project ends, the legacy may whither, Sutton has responded by planning a legacy before the project finished, creating its new strategy whilst Smarter Travel Sutton was still active.
