Abstract

Transport modelling has advanced rapidly over the last few years and we thought it timely to bring some of these new advances to a wider audience. Most of these advances have been focussed on using activities rather than trips to model people’s behaviour so our focus is on Activity Based Modelling Activity Based Models will look familiar, we still have mode and destination choice, highway and public transport assignment so you can do all the things that you currently do and everything a fourstage model does – but Activity Based Models do them better. Activity Based Models also address the other choice situations which current Government guidance (WebTag) requires such as time of day choice, time interval choice (peak spreading) and trip frequency choice. You can also do a whole host of other things such as parking choice, choice of whether to work at home and so on. This issue of TEC brings you an overview of the whole subject with a case study from New York. A later issue, currently planned for February 2009 will bring you more details, more case studies, appraisal and other topics so as to cover the whole field of modelling from the perspective of Activity Based Modelling.
